Highland Glen Park Pond

Highland Glen Park Pond is one of those small Utah fisheries that are easy to overlook. It offers easy access, a variety of fish, and a park where the whole family can spend the day.

The pond is located in Highland, just south of Lone Peak High School. It was constructed as a Utah community fishery in the 1970's and is regularly stocked by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

For me, Highland Glen is the kind of place that makes sense when you don't have an entire day to spend fishing. Grab a couple of rods, and small tackle box and you can be fishing within minutes.

Location

Size

Highland Glen Park Pond is a small, 3 acre community fishing pond. The pond is shallow with an elongated shape with developed shoreline areas.

There are sandy and grassy areas to the west and more vegetation mixed in with fishing peers on the east. You can just about cast to the center of the pond from either side allowing access to the entire pond from shore.

Fish Species

Highland Glen has changed as a fishery over the years. The DWR stocking records show repeated stocking of several species.

  • Rainbow trout

  • Tiger trout

  • Brook trout

  • Channel Catfish

  • Black Bullhead Catfish

  • Bluegill

  • Largemouth Bass

Rainbow trout are one of the main reasons people fish Highland Glen.

During the summer Channel Catfish can be caught regularly in the 14 to 22 inch range.

Highland Glen has an established bluegill population. These are particularly fun for kids and beginning anglers because they can often be caught using very small hooks, pieces of worm and small jigs.

Bass are not necessarily the primary reason to visit Highland Glen, but they add another species for anglers to target.

Habitat & Seasonal Factors

Highland Glen is a small and relatively shallow. A portion of the shoreline is concealed by vegetation and the interior of the pond bottom is layered in aquatic vegetation as well.

The inner weed line can be particularly important. DWR specifically recommends targeting this area for bluegill during the winter.

DWR stops trout stocking because water conditions become too warm for trout stocking in late July and August.

Cool water = trout

Warm water = bluegill, bass and catfish

Spring is one of the best times to fish Highland Glen. DWR normally begins spring trout stocking in early March, with stocking continuing through May and into early June.

This is a great time for simple trout fishing from shore.

Summer changes the character of the fishery.

As the water warms, trout become more difficult to target during the middle of the day. DWR shifts toward channel catfish stocking during June and July.

Early morning and evening are particularly good times to fish because the pond receives considerable recreational use during the middle of the day.

Facilities

One The park include anything you could hope for at a fishing pond.

The park includes:

  • Restrooms

  • Playground

  • Covered picnic pavilion

  • Picnic areas

  • Sand volleyball court

  • Walking and biking trails

  • Open grass areas

  • Fishing access

  • Access to the Murdock Canal Trail

The pavilion can also be reserved for gatherings.

This makes Highland Glen particularly useful for a family fishing trip where everyone doesn't necessarily want to fish the entire time.

Events & Attractions

Highland Glen Park hosts community activities throughout the year.

One of the fishing-related programs associated with the park is the Hooked on Fishing program.

How to Fish Highland Glen Park Pond

Trout

The easiest trout setup is:

Rod: 6–7 foot light or ultralight spinning rod
Line: 4–6 lb test
Hook: Small bait hook
Bait: PowerBait or nightcrawler

Fish the bait either beneath a bobber or behind a casting bubble.

Small inline spinners, spoons and small jigs are also effective but a prone to snags on weedy pond floor.

Bluegill

Bluegill are a great target for kids.

Use a tiny hook and a small piece of worm or mill worm under a small bobber. If you can find schools of bluegill under the fishing peers you can ditch the bobber and sight fish below the peer.

Otherwise, fish close to shore and around vegetation.

Channel Catfish

Use the same setup we did for trout but use a larger hook and raw shrimp.

When to Fish

Best Trout Fishing (March-May)

Spring stocking makes this one of the most consistent periods for trout.

Best Catfish Fishing (June-September)

The Catfish bite is slow during the day, focus on early mornings and evenings.

Best Bluegill Fishing (April-October)

Look for vegetation and shallow shoreline habitat.

Regulations & Important Information

Highland Glen Park Pond is listed as a Utah community fishing water.

The 2026 Utah Fishing Guidebook lists community fisheries with a two-fish daily limit, with common carp not counting toward that limit. The guidebook also states that community waters are open to fishing only while the community parks are open to the public.

Always check the current Utah Fishing Guidebook before fishing because regulations can change.

There is also an important upcoming regulation change: the Utah Wildlife Board approved a change for 2027–28 that will make the largemouth bass daily limit zero at Highland Glen Pond. That means largemouth bass must be released once that regulation takes effect. Check the current guidebook when planning a future trip.

Highland City currently lists the park as open from dawn to dusk.
