Moosehorn Lake (Uinta Mountains)

Moosehorn Lake is a small high-country lake in Utah's Uinta Mountains, located along the Mirror Lake Highway corridor. Like many of the lakes scattered throughout the Uintas, Moosehorn offers a chance to get away from the larger, more developed reservoirs and experience a truly beautiful and relaxing environment.

At high elevation, the scenery is as much a part of the experience as the fishing. The lake is surrounded by forests, rocky mountain peaks and the high-country landscape that makes the Uintas such a popular summer destination.

The drive itself is part of the experience. As you gain elevation, the landscape changes from the forests and valleys around Kamas to the spruce, fir, lodgepole pine, meadows and rocky terrain characteristic of the high Uintas.

For anglers exploring the Mirror Lake Highway, Moosehorn Lake is a hidden gem. Most visiting this stretch of highway pass right by on their way to Mirror Lake. In fact, my family first discovered Moosehorn when we were turned around at the sight of a full campground at Mirror Lake. The Campground at Moosehorn is much smaller but always seamed to have a few openings when everything else was full.

Fishing Moosehorn Lake

A light spinning rod and reel is ideal for most trout fishing in the Uinta Mountain lakes.

In the Uintas your basic fishing kit should include:

  • Light Rod & Reel

  • 4–6 pound fishing line

  • Variety of small spinners, lures & flies

  • Casting bubble setup

  • Power bait/Power eggs

Shore fishing is the natural way to approach Moosehorn Lake. When you arrive, don't automatically pick the first convenient spot. We found that the back side of the lake, just below the rocky cliff provided the fastest fishing.

For rainbows use a single power egg below a casting bubble, you should have enough for dinner in no time. If you're interested in Tiger Trout you can swap the power egg out for a worm. I know it sounds funny but try inflating the worm with a small amount of air, using a cringe, to float the bait off the bottom. Also try a small lure, spinner or run a small fly behind the casting bubble. A renegade should work well.

Fishing Moosehorn Lake With Kids

Moosehorn Lake makes a fantastic family fishing destination. Find a camp site in the near by campground. After setting up camp take some time to explore the area with your kids. Keep your camera handy in case you see Pan-Head, the resident moose who likes the hang out in the meadow above the lake. Then head to the back side of the lake for some fishing and make sure to catch enough for dinner. Tin foil butter trout cooked on a camp fire, stories and dad joke followed by s'mores for desert and your kids will have new memories that will last a life time.
