Currant Creek Get Away

Currant Creek Area

This July 4th we set out for Currant Creek Reservoir for a weekend of family, fun and a little relaxation. The area is one of our favorites during the summer as it is up in the higher elevations set in pines and aspen groves. We arrived as the sun was approaching the horizon, perfect timing for catching a glimpse of the local inhabitants.

We counted over a dozen cotton tails and more than 30 deer in the area. Interestingly we did not see any bucks. It might have something to do with the bucks sensing the presence of such an amazing sportsman near by. But more than likely, I may be in need of an eye exam.

In the morning we put the boat on the water and found ourselves in the fish right away. The first catch was a beautiful healthy 17 inch Tiger Trout. The boy caught this one on a worm and slip-sinker.

Most of our catches came from trolling dodgers and worms at 15 to 20 feet as well as long lining Jake's Spin a Lures 200 feet behind the boat. We only spent an hour and a half on the water but managed to land 7 Cutts and 2 Tigers, all between 13 and 17 inches.

After showing the local trout who was boss we met up with the rest of the fam and acquired the perfect piece of beach front property. The kids cooled themselves splashing in the water while the rest of us enjoyed the collateral spray at the waters edge.

A day on the water is never complete without letting the little ones drive the boat. This is my favorite reservoir to cruise the shoreline taking in the spectacular views.

The shoreline is heavily populated with red sided shiners which offered sport to the two youngest. Although they have a hard time understanding the concept of catch and release, I have a feeling they will become great anglers one day.

The evening of the 4th was quiet and free from the bright flashes and constant booms that fill the night sky back home. Nestled in a pine forest we celebrated by making smores and participated in our own pyrotechnics with the occasional flaming marshmallow.

The next morning we continued where we left off the day before. There were many more boats on the water but there was plenty of room for all. We caught several beautiful Tigers and Cutts. I was amazed at the colors and patterns found on the species of fish we were catching. They truly complimented the scenery and atmosphere of this high mountain reservoir.

The end came way too soon. I found myself reflecting on our trip on the ride home with a car full of exhausted, slumbering campers. There are other fisheries that offer faster fishing action. There are others in the area that offer trophy sized Cutthroat. There are closer opportunities for camping and fishing. However, I can't think of another place that offers it all in such a beautiful package.

Final Tally:
9 Cutthroat
4 Tiger Trout
30+ Minnows
1 Full Tank of R&R
