A Day at Kolob Reservoir

This past late spring, we took a family trip to Sand Hollow. One of the days, we decided to drive up to Kolob Reservoir and see what all the hubbub was about.

We approached from the south, driving up the canyon, and the scenery was incredible. The landscape changed quickly as we climbed out of the St. George area where we were staying, and every bend seemed to bring a new view.

I was surprised by how the area felt both secluded and developed once we got close to the reservoir. There were several cabins and other structures, and parts of it looked almost resort-like. The temperature dropped as we gained elevation. When we arrived at the reservoir we started around the south side of the reservoir and kept going until we found a quieter stretch of shoreline, then set up for lunch and a little fishing.

It was a beautiful spot, and honestly rejuvenating. We fished from the bank, tucked into the shade of a grove of quakies. We caught just enough to keep the young ones interested. Rainbow trout was the target of the day and they did not disappoint. We only stuck around for a couple hours and a few of got brave enough for a short, cold swim.

All in all, it was a fantastic family stop and well worth the drive. I have a feeling we’ll be back again at some point.
