Teapot Lake is a small, high-elevation fishing lake along Utah's Mirror Lake Highway in the Uinta Mountains. Located at about 9,950 feet in elevation, Teapot Lake offers high-country trout fishing surrounded by pine forests and some of the most beautiful and scenic mountain country in Utah.
It is roughly13 acres and is unusually deep for its size at about 46 feet deep. Teapot lake contains rainbow trout, brook trout and has been stocked with albino trout in recent years. Teapot Lake is easily accessable from the highway making it a great option for families, beginning anglers, and anyone looking to explore several Uinta lakes in one trip.
Teapot was one of my favorite lakes to fish along highway 50. It is right off the road but the access is fairly narrow which secludes the lake from the highway. When you are sitting next to the lake you don't feel like you are right next to the highway.
It sits next to the Crystal Lake Trailhead, making it a good place to combine fishing with a day of exploring the Uintas. The summer temperatures in the area rang from 50 to 85 degrees, making the area especially comfortable to visit during the hottest parts of the summer.
Fishing Teapot Lake
A light spinning rod and reel is ideal for most fishing in the Uinta Mountain lakes.
In the Uintas your basic fishing kit should include:
- Light Rod & Reel
- 4-6 pound fishing line
- Variety of small spinners, lures & flies
- Casting bubble setup
- Power bait/Power eggs
Shore fishing is the natural way to approach Teapot Lake. When you arrive, you should pick the first convenient spot to start fishing, but I did, and I did just fine. I found success not too far from the highway on the south side.
Rainbow trout: PowerBait or Power Eggs fished near the bottom, small spoons, and inline spinners.
Brook trout: Small spinners, warms, and small flies.
Fly fishing: Small nymphs, scud imitations, and a fly suspended below a casting bubble if you're using spinning gear.
When should you go?
Summer and early fall are generally the best windows for fishing the high Uintas. Utah DWR says high-elevation lakes and streams typically fish well from July through late September or early October, depending on conditions. Snowstorms can arrive early, so check road and weather conditions before traveling.
Regulations
Fishing regulations can change, so always check the current Utah Division of Wildlife Resources fishing guidebook before your trip.
